Day 2. Adelaide to Kangaroo Island
Early this morning we will drive from Adelaide through the scenic landscape of the Fleurieu Peninsula to Cape Jervis (2 hours travel time) to connect with a morning ferry to Kangaroo Island (45 minutes). We will spend the rest of the day exploring Kangaroo Island with our guide before settling into our accommodation overlooking the sea.
Accommodation: Lodge (Water-view ensuite rooms) Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day 3 & 4. Kangaroo Island
We will spend two full days exploring this amazing Island. During our stay here we will search for Koalas (which have been introduced to the island), Tammar Wallaby (a species that is almost extinct on the adjoining mainland) and Kangaroo Island Kangaroo (a subspecies of Western Grey Kangaroo that only occurs here). We will also visit a beautiful sandy beach to see Australian Sealions, watch their pups nursing, or playing in the surf, see old bulls bearing the scars of territorial disputes and learn about their unique breeding biology. Nearby Cape du Couedic is also home to a Long-nosed (New Zealand) fur seal colony which now number over 50,000 after being decimated by hunting in the early 1800’s. We should also be able to see both Australian and Long-nosed Fur-seals here, and we will also be looking for Short-beaked Echidna (a distinct sub-species that lives on the island). Kangaroo island is also home to a range of rare birds including Cape Barren Goose and the endangered Glossy Black Cockatoo. We will allow plenty of time for photography, including sunrise and sunset at strategic locations like Remarkable Rocks in Flinders Chase National Park.
Accommodation: Lodge (Water-view ensuite rooms). Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner each day.
Day 5. Kangaroo Island to Adelaide
This morning we will visit a wildlife park which is home to some of Australia’s well-known native animals, including kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, echidnas, eagles and wombats. We will then work our way towards Penneshaw to connect with an afternoon ferry back to the Australian mainland and transfer back to Adelaide.
Accommodation: Hotel (ensuite rooms). Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day 6. Adelaide to Hobart
This morning we will travel back to Adelaide airport for our flight to Hobart, Tasmania. We will be met on our arrival by our local guide and spend the afternoon visiting some parks and reserves around Hobart.
Accommodation: Hotel (ensuite room). Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day 7. Hobart to Bruny Island
We have the option to continue exploring the reserves around Hobart before heading to lunawanna alonnah-Bruny Island. Situated 40km south of Hobart, the Island is separated from the Tasmanian mainland by the D’Entrecasteaux Channel and accessed by a vehicle ferry. The ferry trip takes approximately 15 minutes where one can enjoy some wonderful scenery and possibly sea birds alongside the ferry. This afternoon we will visit Bruny’s southern coastline to view the second oldest lighthouse in Australia, and search for species such as Tawny-crowned Honeyeater, Olive Whistler and Yellow-tailed Black-cockatoo. Here we also have a chance to see the Tasmanian sub-species of Short-beaked Echidna, one of Australia’s two egg-laying mammal (monotreme) species. After dinner tonight, we will visit a beach where Short-tailed Shearwaters return to their burrows. Little Penguins may also occasionally be found here, and this is also an excellent location to see and photograph the sunset.
Accommodation: Ensuite Cottages. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day 8. Bruny Island
This morning we will start the day at a privately owned 1,500-acre wildlife sanctuary which is home to all 12 Tasmanian endemic bird species, including one of the largest known colonies of endangered Forty-spotted Pardalote. Strong-billed, Yellow-throated and Black-headed Honeyeaters, Dusky Robin and Green Rosella are also regulars here. Several hides and platforms have also been built around the property which provide close views of some very special species, including a variety of raptors. We will also organize at least one session in the world class raptor photography hide during our visit, which has been developed and constructed under consultancy with environmental scientists, builders, glass manufacturers and several leading professional photographers; everything has been carefully designed to optimize your experience with minimal impact on our visiting raptors, as conservation and the well-being of wildlife and plants on the property is always the highest priority. Depending on the time of year, we may see up to six species of raptor: White-bellied Sea-eagle, Wedge-tailed Eagle, Grey Goshawk (white morph), Brown Goshawk, Brown Falcon and Swamp Harrier.
Today we will also visit a variety of habitats on the island, from coastal beaches for Hooded Plover, Pied and Sooty Oystercatcher, Pacific and Kelp Gull, to rainforest areas in search of Pink Robin and the endemic Scrubtit, Tasmanian Scrubwren and Tasmanian Thornbill. Tonight, we will take an evening drive in search of Tasmania’s nocturnal marsupials. We are likely to see some species which are now restricted to Tasmania including Eastern Quoll (a relative of the Tasmanian Devil) and Tasmanian Pademelon. Bennett’s Wallaby and Brush-tailed Possum are also common here and rare golden/white color morphs of both these species can sometimes be found. If we are lucky, we may also see Long-nosed Potoroo.
Accommodation: Cottages. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day 9. Bruny Island
We will spend a second day touring other areas of beautiful Bruny Island, starting with a pre-breakfast visit to Cloudy Bay overlooking the Southern Ocean for some sunrise photographic opportunities and spectacular rugged coastal scenery. We will then return for breakfast, before heading to other parts of the island that we haven’t yet visited, and better photographic opportunities for a range of birds and wildlife.
Accommodation: Cottages. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day 10. Bruny Island to Mt Field National Park
This morning, we will depart Bruny early, heading towards Mount Field National Park. On route we will visit a lagoon for the chance to see a variety of waterbirds like Australasian Shoveler, Australian Shelduck and Black-fronted Dotterel before continuing to Mount Field. This area is scenically very beautiful and a great place to experience a range of habitats from fern gullies with waterfalls, to alpine heathland and cool temperate rainforest boasting some of the tallest Eucalyptus in Australia. Today we have our first chance of seeing the bizarre Platypus, the other species of Australian monotreme. In the late afternoon we will make our way out of the park to a nearby farm stay where we will overnight.
Accommodation: Luxury Farm cabins. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day 11. Mt Field National Park
We will spend another day exploring this area today which includes a visit to the Styx Forest Reserve which is home to some of the tallest trees in the world (this species is the tallest flowering plant). We will also have more time to photograph the amazing scenery within the national Park, including the ancient giant tree ferns that line the streams and frame the waterfalls.
Accommodation: Hotel. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day 12. Travel to Cradle Mountain
This morning, we will travel north to Cradle Mountain National Park. While today is largely a travel day, we will enjoy wonderful diverse scenery and stop many times en-route to bird and stretch our legs including at an Alpine Lake with incredible flora and landscape and the possibility of Striated Fieldwren. We will also visit a reserve where there is a very good chance of seeing and photographing wild Platypus at close range. We will arrive at our accommodation inside the National Park in the late afternoon. The accommodation provides a wonderful opportunity to view Wombats and Wallabies near your cottages. Echidnas and Platypus are also often seen in the area.
Accommodation: Cabins. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day 13. Cradle Mountain
Today we have a full day to explore the area around Cradle Mountain. This should provide a good chance to see more of Tasmania’s endemic bird species which we may have missed previously, such as Black Currawong and Yellow Wattlebird. In addition to the great birding, we can view and photograph the endemic Tasmanian rainforest flora such as Pencil and King Billy Pines, Myrtle and the famous Fagus (Nothofagus gunnii) which have ancient Gondwanan connections. This is also a good area to view Common Wombat. The photographic opportunities at Dove Lake with Cradle Mountain in the background are superb. Today we will also visit a Tasmanian Devil conservation centre for close up and personal views of this species.
Accommodation: Cabins. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Day 14. Cradle Mountain to north coast of Tasmania
Today we will visit another wildlife conservation centre for more chances of photographing some of Tasmania’s iconic wildlife at close range. We will also explore the northern coastline of Tasmania and Narawntapu National Park which was created to protect the Forester Kangaroo (Tasmanian subspecies of Eastern Grey Kangaroo). There are excellent opportunities for photographing these animals in the late golden afternoon light before heading to our accommodation for our last night in Tasmania.
Accommodation: Historic house (en suite rooms) Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
